On Saturday, April 26, WAHS hosted prom at the Gennetti hotel on 200 W 4th St. The prom theme was Greek gala, paying homage to the stories passed down through time through Greek Mythology. String lights and white cloth decorated the railings of the balcony, and Greek-style pedestals were placed at the entrance to provide a taste of the sophisticated time of Ancient Greece. There were also moving blue and green lights projected onto the ceilings to provide a more carefree and fun environment.
On the balcony, there was a hall of seating where students could look down on the dance floor like the king of Greece. There was also a backroom up there that provided more seating and a standing photo booth prom goers could have their pictures taken with to commemorate the moment. Refreshments were provided with ice-cold water and white cranberry juice. Students could also enjoy an assortment of pretzels, cheese cubes, and a vegetable tray.
This year’s prom court consisted of Shylah Montoya and Maverick Dauber, Haylee Bennett and Kellen Jackson, Gabriel Fioretti and Nylah Ford, Emily Kime and Aiden Everett, Khamani Dyson and Sam Allison, and Ella Adkins and Robert Leiter.
The prom queen was none other than Khamani Dyson, FBLA state competitor and class president. When asked for a comment, she said: “Holding both the title of president and prom queen means the world to me because it proves you don’t have to choose between being respected for your leadership and admired for your grace – you can be both. To the young Black girls who will walk these halls after me; don’t shrink yourself or limit your abilities. Even in predominantly white spaces, you deserve to take up room, be seen, and celebrated.”
Prom King was Kellen Jackson, previously seen on the homecoming court and player on the varsity baseball team. When he was asked he commented: “Winning Prom King allows me to know that I can make an impact on the people around me, and allows me to realize all of the great people I am surrounded by in this high school.”
