Three seniors see hard work pay off last weekend as they captured medals at the state championship.
Caulder and Grissom returned to the championship meet this year with clear goals in mind. Both athletes made it to states last year, but hoped to build on last year’s performances.
Caulder Diakite qualified for the 110 hurdles and made it out of the prelims on Friday with an impressive time of 14.38. This was Diakite’s personal best time by .27 seconds. Caulder took 6th in the finals with a time of 14.51.
Anyae Grissom took 8th last year in the 100 hurdles at the state meet, but was not satisfied. In the prelims, Grissom set a new Williamsport record with an impressive time of 14.67 seconds. She built on that on Saturday by finishing 6th in the finals.
Nariq Burks had an outstanding performance at the meet, taking bronze in the javelin. For a long time, Burks didn’t even consider the javelin “his event.” But he continued to work at it throughout the season and won the PHAC title, while also qualifying for districts with a throw of 182-10. Burks crushed that throw on Saturday with a throw of 197-2, his personal best by nearly 15 feet.
