The members of the Williamsport Area High School Model UN club have been active lately, traveling to both Bloomsburg University and Penn College. The members went to Bloomsburg University on April 9 to participate in a high school Model UN convention. Ashlin Paulhamus and Elijah Hopton’s work in the Security Council representing Russia won the club the peer award. The convention hosted eight nearby high schools and had 125 students present.
On April 19, 41 members of the Model UN club traveled to Penn College. There, they debated a range of topics ranging from the UN, economics, humanitarianism, and other international issues against 150 students from other high schools. More than half of Williamsport’ Model UN’s students won superior delegation awards. Elaina Girton, Aiden Morgan, Ava Girton, and Adam Pritchard, representing Nauru, won Best Delegation among the whole convention.
This is an opportunity for students to use the skills they developed in the club in competition. Caroline Hubbard, a sophomore in the Model UN club, says, “The competitions are actually fun. It’s cool to be properly judged on what you’ve been working on and meet students from other schools. I like getting to do this with the people in our club too.” The club has seen a lot of success at these past conventions and are ready and aiming for more next year!
