The Millionaires started off their season hot, rolling four teams in a row and pitching two shutouts. The Millionaires defense was a noticeably big part of their game. The first four games the Millionaires had a balanced offense on the ground and in the air.
Players like Tevin Williams, Kyreek Bradshaw, and Trey Damstroder were a big part of the passing game when they got the ball in their hands, along with quarterbacks Elijah Way and Zion Hughes.
The Millionaires game plan seemed to be flawless. But as the season went on, the competition got more challenging. The Millionaires went on a five-game losing streak, but the team did not let it get to them, showing more and more grit after each loss.
After their final loss to Hollidaysburg, they were hungry for a long-awaited win. They went on to host Wilkes-Barre at home. The Millionaires showed up and wanted revenge after losing 56-7 to them the previous year. The game came down to the last drive, when Hughes sealed the game with a pick-6. This secured their final regular season win, sitting the Millionaires at 5-5.
WAHS hosted a rematch at home against the Hazleton Cougars for the first round of the PIAA District Playoffs. The defense showed up and pitched the shutout, motivating the offense to get in the end zone three times. The final score was 21-0, moving the Millionaires on to yet another rematch against the Wilkes-Barre Wolfpack. The boys took a trip to the Wolfpack’s stadium, where the players were standing outside of the locker room taunting them as they unloaded from the bus. The Millionaires demonstrated focus and discipline from the time they got off the bus until the time they got back on at the end of the night. The defense handled business after pitching yet another shut out, winning the the District Championship for the first time in 10 years.
“My favorite part of the season was becoming district champions,” said senior player Samir Williams.
