Each year, the YWCA holds a “Women of Excellence” Awards Ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of local women.

“The ceremony was really nice,” said Emlyn Kinley who was selected for the STEM category.  “I think what they do [recognizing women in our community] is really important,” Kinley emphasized.

In addition to recognizing women, the event also nominates and recognizes young ladies from local school districts in each of the seven categories. Students from Williamsport, Jersey Shore, South Williamsport, Loyalsock, and Montoursville were nominated this year.

Students from Williamsport Area High School had winners in six of the seven categories. This year’s winners included: Arts & Culture, Kathryn Niklaus; Advocacy, Charley Greevy; Health & Wellness, Elizabeth Shultz; STEM, Emlyn Kinley; Sports, Payton Baney; and Junior Rising Star, Faith Nonemaker.

“I wasn’t expecting to win,” reflected Kinley, “but I was very excited when I heard I won.”

“I was actually nominated last year for the Rising Star category, but I think STEM is a much better fit for me,” Kinley added.

Senior Ella Wilson, last year’s Junior Rising Star, was a nominee in the Advocacy category.

Math teacher Mrs. Wendy Fowler was nominated in the STEM category.
