Students experiment with perception in psychology class

The sense of sight is a very strong sense, and we often take for granted how much we rely on it. In order to demonstrate this to students, Mrs. Hutchinson arranged an experiment for the Intro to Psychology students.

Students were paired off with partners.  Then each student took a turn wearing a blindfold while their partner guided them through the hallways. Students agreed, this was harder than they thought it would be.

“Wearing a blindfold forces you to use your other senses more,” explained junior Nevaeh Entz.

Students reported their partners would have run into lots of things if they didn’t stop them. “We aren’t supposed to touch them, just guide them with our voice so that they don’t get hurt,” Entz said.

“They walk really, really slow when they’re blindfolded. Even when you tell them there’s nothing in front of them, they still walk really slow. It’s like they can’t trust you even though you can see and they can’t,” Entz added.
